As Prize Draw Operators Scale, Winner Selection Must Be Built for Scrutiny
Winvia Entertainment’s announcement of a new £33 million three-year term loan from Barclays, alongside acquisition facilities of up to £20 million, is the latest sign that the UK prize-draw sector is entering a more mature phase.
The AIM-listed group, which owns brands including Best of the Best, Click Competitions and Rev Comps, says the new facilities will support growth and potential acquisitions in a fragmented market. That is significant not only for investors. It also raises a practical question for every operator hoping to scale: can your draw process withstand the scrutiny that comes with growth?
Growth changes what “fair” needs to look like
The UK prize-draw market is already substantial, with research commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport estimating annual value at £1.3 billion, 7.4 million adult participants and more than 400 operators. As capital enters the market and established groups acquire smaller brands, operational standards are no longer an internal matter.
A growing operator needs to demonstrate that its customer protections, free-entry route, complaints process and promotional claims are consistent across every brand it runs. The DCMS Voluntary Code of Good Practice provides a useful framework, covering player protections, transparency and accountability. It includes expectations around age verification, responsible payment practices and clear complaints handling.
But one moment still carries disproportionate weight with customers: the selection of the winner.
A random result is not the same as a provable result
Many operators describe their selection process as random. That description alone does not tell a player how the result was generated, whether the input data was complete, or whether the process could have been changed after the draw.
That distinction matters more as operators become larger and more visible. A winner-selection process that relies on an opaque manual step or a basic, undocumented random-number tool may be adequate until a customer challenges a result, a partner asks for evidence, or an investor begins due diligence. At that point, “trust us” is not a robust control.
A credible process should be independently verifiable. It should create a clear record of what was selected, when it was selected and how the result was produced — without relying solely on the operator’s own word.
Independent verification supports the whole customer journey
The DCMS Code is designed to strengthen confidence in a sector that sits close to gambling and serves a significant number of people who also participate in commercial gambling. Transparency therefore needs to extend beyond terms and conditions. It should be visible at the point where a participant discovers the draw, enters it and sees the winner selected.
UKCPSA’s Certified Ticket Selector gives operators an independent, cryptographically secure method for selecting winners in live draws. It is designed to go beyond a basic random-number generator by providing a selection process that can be explained, evidenced and reviewed.
For operators pursuing acquisition, refinancing or rapid growth, that evidence has commercial value. It can support internal governance, strengthen audit trails and help preserve customer confidence when brands, platforms or processes change hands. Most importantly, it gives participants a reason to believe that the result was fair because the operator can show them how fairness was protected.
Professionalisation should raise the standard for everyone
Winvia’s financing is not a regulatory announcement, and access to capital does not automatically make an operator compliant. But it reflects a market where scale, technology and consolidation are increasingly shaping the competitive landscape.
The operators most likely to thrive will be those that treat transparency and accountability as infrastructure, not marketing language. That means building reliable controls before they are demanded by a lender, partner, regulator or unhappy customer.
If your organisation is growing, acquiring brands or preparing for greater scrutiny, now is the time to make winner selection independently verifiable. Learn more about UKCPSA’s Certified Ticket Selector and give every draw the evidence it deserves.
